The Serpens Star-forming Region in Hco
نویسنده
چکیده
This poster presents single-dish and aperture-synthesis observations of the J=1–0 (λ ≈ 3 mm) transitions of HCO, HCN, and N2H + towards the Serpens star-forming region. Jets driven by young stars affect the structure and the chemistry of their surrounding cloud, and this work aims to assess the extent to which the emission of these three molecular lines is dominated by such processes. In Serpens I find that N2H + 1–0 traces the total amount of material, except in two regions slightly ahead of shocks. In contrast, the HCO and, especially, HCN emission is dominated by regions impacted by outflows. One previously unknown, strongly shocked region is located ∼ 0.1 pc northwest of the young stellar object SMM 4. There is a marked spatial offset between the peaks in the HCN and the N2H + emission associated with shocked regions. I construct a simple, qualitative chemical model where the N2H + emission increases in the magnetic precursor of a C-type shock, while N2H + is destroyed deeper in the shock as the neutrals heat up and species like HCN and water are released from icy grain mantles. I conclude that N2H + is a reliable tracer of cloud material, and that unresolved observations of HCO and HCN will be dominated by material impacted by outflows.

The onset of X-ray emission in young stellar objects A Chandra observation of the Serpens star-forming region
Aims. To study the properties of X-ray emission from young stellar objects (YSOs) through their evolution from Class I to Class III and determine whether Class 0 protostars emit X-rays. Methods. A deep Chandra X-ray observation of the Serpens star-forming region was obtained. The Serpens Cloud Core is ideally suited for this type of investigation, being populated by a dense and extremely young ...
متن کاملSTRUCTURE AND CHEMISTRY IN THE NORTHWESTERN CONDENSATION OF THE SERPENS MOLECULAR CLOUD CORE JosEPH P. McMuLLIN AND LEE
We present single-dish and interferometric observations of gas and dust in the core of the Serpens molecular cloud, focusing on the northwestern condensation. Single-dish molecular line observations are used to probe the structure and chemistry of the condensation while high-resolution images of CS and CH 30H are combined with continuum observations from A. = 1.3 mm to A. = 3.5 em to study the ...
متن کاملSerpens Cluster B and VV Ser Observed With High Spatial
We report on diffraction-limited observations in the far-infrared and submillimeter of the Cluster B region of Serpens (G3-G6 Cluster) and of the Herbig Be star to the south, VV Ser. The observations were made with the Spitzer MIPS instrument in fine-scale mode at 70μm, in normal mapping mode at 160μm (VV Ser only), and the CSO SHARC-II camera at 350μm (Cluster B only). We use these data to def...
متن کاملDetection of Infall Signatures Towards Serpens SMM 4
We present the detection of kinematic infall signatures towards the Class 0 protostellar system SMM4 in the Serpens cloud core. We have observed the dense molecular gas towards the embedded source using millimeter and submillimeter line transitions of density sensitive molecular tracers. High signal-to-noise ratio maps obtained in HCO + J=1→0, J=3→2 and J=4→3, and CS J=2→1 show the blue-bulge i...
متن کاملOutflow and Infall in a Sample of Massive Star Forming Regions II: Large Scale Kinematics
We present maps of seven sources selected from Klaassen & Wilson (2007a) in SiO (J=8-7) and HCO and HCO (J=4-3) which were obtained using HARPB on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find that four out of our seven sources have infall signatures based on their HCO emission profiles. From our maps, we have determined the extent of both the outflowing and infalling regions towards these sources...
